Supporting New Managers Globally:

A Yearlong Learning Journey at UNICEF

The context

In 2022, UNICEF launched the New People Management Programme (NPMP) — the first-ever 12-month global training initiative designed to support newly appointed first-line managers across the organization.
This wasn’t just a set of webinars. It was a thoughtfully crafted learning journey built to:
  • Equip new managers with confidence and skill
  • Align development needs with 360° feedback and live data
  • Foster a global peer learning culture

As learning experience designer and lead facilitator, I collaborated on the end-to-end creation of this pioneering programme — from structure to delivery.

My role

The approach

We used a blended learning format combining structured content with in-person & virtual sessions, peer connection, and self-paced reflection.
Topics covered included:
  • Purpose & engagement
  • Difficult conversations
  • Delegation & motivation
  • Time & performance management
  • Emotional intelligence & leadership coaching
  • Learning & career development
  • Managing hybrid teams & upwards communication
Additional themes were integrated based on participant 360 feedback.
The NPMP set a new standard for leadership development at UNICEF. For the first time, new managers had access to a yearlong support system — helping them move from reactive to reflective leadership.
It also sparked a cross-functional peer culture that extended beyond the programme, strengthening connections across global offices.

The impact

Good management starts with ongoing, supported learning — and even in the world’s most fast-paced, purpose-driven organizations, making space for that is possible and powerful.
